That day, so many people gathered in the kingdom’s main square that there was hardly any free space left.
Some came out of curiosity to watch the execution, others because they were afraid to disobey the king’s command, and still others hoped to witness another spectacle of the kind the ruler loved to use to entertain his subjects.
The king himself sat on a high throne erected directly above the square.
He was a man feared by everyone. He had ruled for many years and had long grown accustomed to getting everything he wanted.
If someone argued with him, that person could expect prison. If someone dared to oppose him openly, the punishment became even more terrible.
Several months earlier, the king had noticed a young woman named Emilia.
She lived in a small village on the edge of the kingdom and was the daughter of a simple blacksmith.
She did not belong to a noble family, possessed no wealth, and had never dreamed of living in a palace.
But her beauty quickly became known throughout the land.
One day, rumors of her reached the king himself. He ordered that the young woman be brought to the palace.
When Emilia stood before the throne, the ruler immediately declared:
“You will become my wife.”
Silence filled the hall.
Everyone expected the young woman to fall to her knees with joy. But something entirely different happened.
Emilia looked calmly at the king and replied:
“I do not love you, and I will not become your wife.”
The courtiers turned pale. Some even lowered their heads, afraid to witness the ruler’s reaction. The king remained silent for several seconds. Then he slowly rose from his throne.
“Do you understand whom you are refusing?”
“Yes.”
“And you still say no?”
“Yes.”
After that, the king ordered the young woman to be thrown into the dungeon. For several days, he hoped she would change her mind. But every time, he heard the same answer. Eventually, his patience ran out.
He decided to stage a public execution. Beneath the square was a deep stone pit where lions were kept to punish criminals.
Almost no one was ever thrown there, because the mere sight of those beasts was enough to terrify anyone.
When the guards led Emilia into the square, the crowd parted. The young woman was pale, but she remained calm.
She did not cry or beg for mercy.
The king rose from his seat and announced loudly:
“Let everyone see what happens to those who dare defy me.”
The guards led Emilia to the edge of the pit. Threatening roars could already be heard from below. Four enormous lions paced across the stone floor. The crowd froze. Some people turned away. Others closed their eyes.
Then the young woman was pushed down.
The crowd gasped. The king smiled with satisfaction and leaned forward, expecting to witness her destruction.
The lions immediately noticed the human. One of the beasts slowly began walking toward her. The others followed. The roaring grew louder and louder. Emilia stood perfectly still.
She understood there was nowhere to run.
A massive lion approached until it was only a few steps away.
The square was so silent that only the animals’ breathing could be heard.

The lion stopped.
Then it slowly lowered its head.
A moment later, it lay down at the young woman’s feet.
The second lion did the same.
Then the third and the fourth followed.
The crowd could not believe their eyes. People began looking at one another in disbelief.
The king suddenly jumped to his feet.
“What is happening?!”
But no one could answer.
A few seconds later, something even more astonishing occurred. One of the lions stood up, approached Emilia, and gently rubbed its head against her hand like a house cat.
A frightened murmur swept through the square.
The king turned pale with rage.
“Open the cages! Release the other lions!”
The guards obeyed the order.
Several more adult male lions emerged from a neighboring gate.
Now there were eight.
Everyone expected the situation to change.
But the new lions also approached the young woman and calmly lay down beside her, as if protecting her.
The king began shouting at the guards and demanding an explanation.
At that moment, the old keeper of the royal menagerie, who had cared for the lions for many years, unexpectedly stepped forward.
He stared at the young woman for a long time before speaking.
“Your Majesty… I remember her.”
“What do you mean?”
“Twenty years ago, during a terrible storm, a lioness refused to feed her newborn cub. Back then, a young woman came every day to care for him. She saved his life.”
The keeper pointed down into the pit.
“That lion is the very same cub. Today, he is the leader of the entire pride.”
The king waved his hand irritably.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
The old man let out a heavy sigh.
“Because that woman was this young woman’s mother.”
Silence fell over the square once again.
The keeper continued:
“After her mother died, Emilia helped me care for the animals for many years. She fed them, treated them, and rescued injured animals. The lions have known her since childhood.”
Now everything became clear.
The animals did not see a victim before them.
They saw someone who had cared for them all her life.
The crowd began loudly discussing what they had just heard.
People started demanding that the young woman be freed. The guards were no longer eager to carry out the king’s commands.
Some of them even climbed down into the pit and opened the gates.
When Emilia emerged, thousands of people greeted her with applause.
And on that day, for the first time, the king realized that he had lost the most important thing of all — the fear of his subjects.
