My 10-year-old daughter locked herself in the bathroom every day right after school and assured me she simply loved cleanliness. But one day, while unclogging the drain, I found something strange there and realized with horror that my daughter had been hiding something from me all this time 😱😨

My ten-year-old daughter Emma did the same thing every day: as soon as she came home from school, she dropped her backpack by the door and ran straight to the bathroom.

At first, I didn’t think much of it. Kids sweat, get dirty, want to wash the school day off themselves. But over time it became too identical. No snack, no conversation. Sometimes she didn’t even say hello. Just:

“I’m going to the bathroom!” — and the lock clicked.

One evening I gently asked:

“Emma, why do you go shower right away every single day?”

She smiled carefully.

“I just like being clean.”

That answer should have reassured me. But something tightened inside me. Emma had never been obsessed with cleanliness. She could forget to change her socks, leave her things scattered around, and didn’t worry about stains. And now — “I just like being clean.” It sounded rehearsed.

A week later, the bathtub started draining poorly. The water lingered longer than usual, and a gray film appeared on the surface. I put on gloves, unscrewed the drain cover, and pushed in a plastic drain snake.

It snagged on something. I pulled, thinking it was a clump of hair.

But from the pipe came a wet lump of dark strands tangled with thin threads. I pulled harder, and along with it came a piece of fabric, stuck together with soap.

It wasn’t just threads. It was cloth.

I rinsed it under the tap, and when the dirt washed away, I saw the pattern — light blue plaid. The same as Emma’s school skirt.

My fingers went numb. Clothes don’t end up in a drain by accident. They’re pushed in there when something is torn. When someone is trying to get rid of evidence. I turned the piece of fabric over and noticed a stain. Brownish, faded, but clear.

It wasn’t dirt. My heart was pounding so loudly I could hear it in my ears. The house was quiet. Emma was still at school.

I tried to find a simple explanation. Maybe she had fallen. A cut. A scraped knee. But her daily urgent showers suddenly looked different. Not like a habit. Like a necessity.

My hands were shaking when I picked up the phone. I didn’t wait until evening — I called the school immediately.

“Can you tell me if Emma is okay? Were there any injuries? Did something happen after class? She showers every day as soon as she gets home.”

There was a pause on the other end. Too long. Then the secretary said softly:

“Mrs. Miller… could you please come here right now?”

My mouth went dry.

“Why?”

And her answer sent a cold chill down my spine.

“Because you’re not the first mother to call about a child who starts washing immediately after school.” 😱😨

When I arrived at the school, the principal and the school psychologist were already waiting for me. From their faces, I could tell it was serious.

“Please tell me honestly, what’s going on?” I asked.

The principal sighed and looked at the psychologist.

“A game has appeared among the students. It was organized by older students. They created a closed chat and began giving the younger kids daily tasks.”

At first, everything seemed silly and harmless. Come to school wearing mismatched socks. Stay silent all day. Hide a note in your backpack without getting caught.

But then the tasks became stranger.

Lock yourself in the bathroom for a certain amount of time. Dirty part of your school uniform and try to hide it. Create a “secret” you’re not allowed to tell your parents about.

For each completed task, points were awarded. Those who earned more were promised the status of “The Chosen,” a separate chat, “special trust.”

“Your daughter wasn’t harmed,” the psychologist said immediately. “But she participated.”

Something clenched inside me.

Now her daily trips to the bathroom looked different. She wasn’t washing. She was locking herself in to complete a task. Sometimes she had to hide a stained piece of fabric. Sometimes she had to stay inside exactly ten minutes and take a photo of the timer as proof.

“The kids wanted to become part of ‘The Chosen,’” the principal added quietly. “They were promised they would become part of something important.”

When Emma was brought into the office, she avoided my gaze.

“Mom, it’s just a game,” she whispered. “Everyone wanted in. If you refuse, you get excluded.”

The scariest part was realizing that ten-year-old children are willing to hide anything just to feel special.
