I was told—quite politely—that while I had every right to eat the meal I’d brought, the airline encouraged passengers to be mindful of strong food odors. The attendant’s voice was calm, practiced, the kind that could soothe a crying baby or defuse a storm of angry travelers. I nodded, understanding the delicate balance she was trying to maintain. Yet there was something stubborn in the air—perhaps from hunger, perhaps from the exhaustion of my long day—that made me take one more deliberate bite. The woman huffed dramatically, as if my burger were an act of personal sabotage, and I realized this flight was going to be a long one.
