I went to meet my girlfriend’s parents for the very first time, a moment I had been both anticipating and dreading. I felt that familiar mix of nerves and excitement as we approached their house, rehearsing polite greetings in my head, hoping to make a good impression. Her stepdad, a tall man with a calm presence, welcomed me warmly, shaking my hand firmly but kindly. As we settled into the living room, we started making small talk, and soon he asked me about my own parents.
