Marian Lois Shields Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama and a quiet yet formidable presence in one of America’s most prominent families, passed away on May 31, 2024, at the age of 86 in her hometown of Chicago.
Born Marian Lois Shields on July 30, 1937, on Chicago’s South Side, Robinson grew up in a modest household amid the challenges of a deeply segregated city. She later became a dedicated mother to Michelle and her brother Craig, instilling in them the values of education, resilience, and hard work.
A former secretary and executive assistant, she raised her children primarily on her own after the death of her husband, Fraser Robinson, while working to support the family.
