Controversy Erupts During Duke University Commencement

At Duke University’s commencement ceremony, a group of students staged a walkout in protest during the introduction of Jerry Seinfeld as the commencement speaker.

The walkout was in response to Seinfeld’s public support for Israel, reflecting the ongoing wave of protests and disruptions seen at various college campuses around the country.

As the students exited the venue, they chanted “Free, free Palestine,” while some other graduates appeared to mock the protestors.

The incident quickly sparked widespread discussion online, with some critics arguing that the protest was rooted in antisemitism, pointing to Seinfeld’s Jewish background.

Former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger voiced his criticism of the walkout, suggesting that it was driven by antisemitism.

On the other hand, Democratic Representative Daniel Goldman defended Seinfeld, stating that his Jewish heritage should not be conflated with his political stance on Israel.

In response to the criticism, the organizers of the walkout clarified their position, stating that their protest was directed at Seinfeld’s vocal support for Israel, not his religion.

They called on Duke University to disclose any investments related to Israel and urged the school to consider divesting from companies associated with the country.

The protestors also advocated for peace in the midst of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Despite the walkout, Seinfeld continued with his speech, receiving an honorary degree and addressing the crowd without further major interruption.

Duke University issued a statement acknowledging the protest,

affirming the institution’s commitment to supporting peaceful expression while also emphasizing the celebratory nature of the graduation ceremony.

Duke spokesperson Frank Tramble expressed the university’s position, stating,

“We’re excited and delighted for the Class of 2024 and their families.

We understand the depth of feeling in our community, and as we have all year, we respect the right of everyone at Duke to express their views peacefully.”

The incident, while disruptive, highlighted the growing tensions surrounding political debates on college campuses and the complex intersections of identity, politics, and free speech.
