Breaking – 9 injured, including newborn child, in ambulance rollover crash!

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening. One woman, who was parking nearby, said the first thing she noticed was the sound — metal crashing, glass shattering, and the thud of the ambulance overturning. “You never expect to see an ambulance crash like that,” she said. “Those are the people who come to help everyone else. Suddenly, they were the ones who needed help.”

The overturned ambulance had five people inside: three EMTs and two patients, including the newborn. Bystanders quickly called 911, and within minutes, units from Albany Police, Dougherty County EMS, and the Fire Department arrived, turning the scene into a full-scale rescue operation.

Debris littered the road — broken medical equipment, supplies, and parts of the ambulance. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle while paramedics helped their injured colleagues and patients. Despite the severity of the crash, all nine people from the three vehicles were safely removed and taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Hospital officials later confirmed that everyone involved — EMTs, the newborn, and the drivers of the other two vehicles — suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were in stable condition.

For Dougherty County EMS, relief was immense. James Gibney, the department’s director, praised the response and the outcome. “We’re beyond grateful this didn’t turn tragic,” he said. “Our crews put themselves on the line every day. Today, they were on the receiving end of an emergency, but their professionalism never wavered.”

The newborn had been secured in a transport device designed for infants, which likely prevented serious injury. At the hospital, the child was examined immediately and monitored as a precaution. The family expressed gratitude to the responders who stabilized the infant after the crash.

Georgia State Patrol investigators began reconstructing the events shortly after 7:25 a.m., analyzing skid marks, vehicle damage, and the final positions of the vehicles. Witnesses, EMTs, and the drivers were interviewed. While it’s confirmed the ambulance had its emergency lights flashing, investigators have not yet concluded who had the right-of-way or whether factors like speed, visibility, or reaction time contributed.

Nearby businesses provided security footage to help determine whether civilian drivers failed to yield or if timing at the intersection played a role.

The crash required immediate operational adjustments for Dougherty County EMS. With one ambulance out of service and several crew members injured, other units were rerouted to maintain coverage. Dispatchers coordinated with neighboring counties to prevent delays in emergency responses. Pine Avenue and Monroe Street remained closed for several hours while crews cleared debris and towed the damaged vehicles.

At the hospital, nurses and doctors praised the EMTs’ composure. Despite being injured themselves, they prioritized the well-being of their patients. “They were hurting, but they stayed calm,” one nurse said. “It’s instinct for them. Even when they’re the ones in need, they think like caregivers.”

Albany Police used the incident to remind the public about an important safety rule: when an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and sirens, drivers should move to the right and stop. “Seconds matter,” a spokesperson said. “A pause or mistake at an intersection can change lives instantly.”

No names have been released. Both the pickup and Buick drivers are cooperating with investigators. EMS personnel will receive medical monitoring and counseling to address the psychological impact of being in a crash while transporting patients.

Local residents responded with overwhelming support, thanking responders and wishing them a speedy recovery. Some called for improved safety measures at high-risk intersections, including better preemption signals and clearer signage.

The damaged ambulance will remain out of service until repairs are completed. Replacing or rebuilding specialized EMS vehicles can take months, but the county plans to expedite the process to restore full capacity.

Georgia State Patrol officials said a full report will be released once all evidence and witness statements are reviewed. “The goal is not just to assign fault,” one trooper said, “but to understand exactly how this happened and prevent it in the future.”

For a morning that could have ended in tragedy, the outcome — nine injured but all alive — was a small miracle. For the EMS crews, the newborn, and the community watching, it was a sobering reminder that even the most experienced lifesavers are not immune to danger.

Yet in the end, everyone survived. In a crash like this, that alone is something to be grateful for.
