I stopped at a gas station after work, tired and ready to get home. As I stepped inside to pay, a man walked past me toward the door.

At first, I didn’t think anything of it — until I noticed his jacket. A leather jacket, worn at the sleeves,

covered in patches collected from road trips and concerts.

My brother’s jacket. The same stain near the pocket, the same frayed collar.

A jacket that shouldn’t exist anywhere except in old photos.

My heart froze. Without thinking, I called out his name. “Adam!” The man stopped mid-step. His shoulders tensed.

my pulse racing. He cut behind the building into the shadows, but for one brief moment before he disappeared, our eyes met again.

In that flash of connection, I felt it — the certainty I had been missing all these years.

It was him. I didn’t catch up to him, but something came back to me that night: hope.
