The story truly began in the spring of 2018, when a row of arborvitae trees along the east side of the family’s yard started to decline. Deer had damaged most of them during the winter, leaving the once-beautiful green border looking uneven and bare. James, known in his family for being practical and hands-on, decided it was time to replace the trees with something more durable — perhaps bamboo, which local wildlife rarely disturbed.
