I was ten years old when my life felt like it was shifting beneath me in ways I couldn’t quite understand. New routines, new expectations, new emotions—but most of all, a new stepdad named Jim, who seemed to appear out of nowhere. I wasn’t ready for him, not for the changes he represented, and certainly not for the role he was stepping into—a role that had always been my mom’s world and, until then, my own. Change felt uncomfortable, almost threatening. I had imagined that our little family was fixed, predictable, a world I could navigate without worry.
