I took my stepfather to the emergency room early one cold, silent morning—the kind of quiet that presses on your chest before you understand why. He’d suffered a heart attack at home, clutching his chest and repeating that he was “okay,” even as sweat streamed down his face. I didn’t debate with him. I helped him into the car and drove straight to the hospital, staying by his side through every scan, every wire attached to his body, every uneasy pause from the medical staff.
