Am I Wrong for Kicking My Brother and His Pregnant Girlfriend Out of My Home?

A man revealed that he butted heads with his brother after the sibling’s girlfriend threw away his food.

Redditors weighed in on the situation, offering different opinions.

In June 2023, a Reddit user shared a story that quickly became the center of attention. The Original Poster (OP), a 27-year-old man living alone, found himself in a difficult situation with his younger brother, aged 21, and his 19-year-old pregnant girlfriend.

The couple, residing with their parents due to financial constraints, were invited over to OP’s house for dinner so the two siblings could bond with each other.

Yet, what was supposed to be a pleasant catch-up turned sour almost immediately upon the girlfriend’s arrival.

The trouble began the moment she stepped into OP’s home, as she expressed her discomfort with the smell of the steak he was preparing, claiming it made her nauseous.

Despite OP’s attempt to offer an alternative, she insisted on Chinese food, prompting her boyfriend to fetch some from the nearest mall.

Thinking that was the end of it, OP was in for another surprise.

The situation escalated when he came back from the bathroom and discovered the girlfriend discarding his unfinished steak into the garbage, citing the smell’s intensity as the reason.

Her actions did not stop there; she proceeded to spray perfume in his kitchen, in an attempt to get rid of the offending odor.

Frustrated and feeling disrespected in his own home, OP confronted the couple.

Despite his brother’s attempts to mediate and the girlfriend’s tears, he stood firm on his decision to ask them to leave, Chinese food in hand. OP expressed:

“I was beyond furious at this point and sent her back to the living room and after my brother came back from the mall, I kicked both of them out.”

His brother tried to persuade him to let them back inside the house, but he refused. At that point, the girlfriend could not stop crying.

OP’s decision to kick out his sibling and his partner did not sit well with his parents.

They were upset with him and accused him of being insensitive, especially considering the girlfriend’s pregnant state and the influence of hormones on her behavior.

“I told them that she literally threw away our dinner, but they said that I shouldn’t have yelled at her or kicked them out as she’s still just a teenager,” said OP.

They further highlighted the strain his actions placed on the couple’s relationship, noting that it led to the brother being sent to the couch for the night.

OP noted this was despite his brother defending the girlfriend against him, adding he could not see how this was his fault.

OP defended his actions by highlighting the disrespect shown towards his generosity and the boundaries overstepped within his personal space.

He asked Redditors whether he lacked tact in dealing with a pregnant teenager.

The incident received divided opinions from the Reddit community, with some siding with OP for standing his ground and others criticizing his lack of empathy towards a pregnant teenager experiencing hormonal fluctuations.

“NTA. I can completely understand the smell being too much for her, I was like that when I was pregnant. But the solution was for her to leave. Throwing away someone else’s food was way over the line,” said one Redditor. Another stated“NTA where I live steak is expensive and I would be mad too. If she couldn’t handle the smell they could’ve left and you could’ve met up with them on another occasion.”

Someone else commented that it does not matter that the girlfriend had pregnancy hormones as what she did was unacceptable and had to leave the property.

One person empathized with her, adding that even so, she had to remove herself from the situation.

The Reddit user further stated that she crossed the line and so OP is not to blame for how the situation panned out.

Was OP right in kicking out his brother and his pregnant girlfriend? Do you think the girlfriend was wrong to throw out OP’s food? What would you do if you were in OP’s position?
