Residents near Woods Point, about 178km east of Melbourne, reported feeling tremors shortly after 5.20am on Wednesday.

Seismic activity monitors detected the shake at a depth of 1km.

Light sleepers and early risers quickly took to social media to report the quake.

I feel vindicated,’ one said.

Another thought something had hit their home after hearing a loud noise.

‘That was such a sudden jolt I was legit confused if something hit the building or not,’ they wrote.

The quake was felt all the way in Melbourne, as far west as Sunbury and south as Carrum Downs.

Earthquakes reaching 3.1 magnitude are considered minor and unlikely to cause damage.
