Bogotá, Colombia – Angie Xiomara Valencia ‘s name

resonated on social media as that of a cheerful, enterprising young woman with dreams to fulfill. Her life, however, was marked by a tragic ending that has shocked the country. Behind that story lies the name of a man many today consider a symbol of horror and betrayal:

Víctor Cardona , the person who, according to the investigation, did the worst thing to Angie.

Angie Xiomara was just 24 years old. She was a university student, a lover of art and cooking, and maintained a strong presence on social media where she shared her life naturally. For some time, she had been in a relationship with Víctor Cardona, a man 12 years her senior, who appeared stable and “kind” to those around her. But behind that image lay a dark reality.

A relationship marked by control

According to Angie’s close friends, the young woman began to show warning signs: progressive isolation, anxiety, and a constant state of alert. “She told us he was jealous, that he didn’t like her talking to others, that he checked her cell phone. But she also said she loved him very much… and she went back to him again and again,” says a friend who preferred to remain anonymous.

Last Sunday, everything reached a point of no return. Angie was found dead in the apartment she shared with Víctor, in northern Bogotá. Her body showed signs of physical violence and asphyxiation. The scene left authorities speechless.  Cardona had fled.

The capture and the confession

Thanks to security cameras and telephone monitoring, authorities were able to locate Víctor at his family’s farm in Cundinamarca. He was arrested 48 hours after the crime. In his initial statement before the Prosecutor’s Office,  he confessed to the crime , alleging an alleged “passionate argument.”

The prosecutor in the case was clear: “It wasn’t an impulsive act, but rather premeditated behavior. There was manipulation, control, and constant violence toward Angie. Víctor Cardona represents the classic profile of an aggressor who refuses to accept a woman’s freedom.”

An outraged country

The news has sparked outrage across the country. The hashtag  #JusticiaParaAngie  went viral, with thousands of users demanding a life sentence for the attacker. Feminist organizations called for marches in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali, denouncing that this is not an isolated case, but rather part of an alarming pattern of gender-based violence that claims the life of  a woman every three days in Colombia .

“Angie was light”

Her family remembers her as a noble, creative, and generous young woman. “Angie was a light. She wanted to have her dessert business, travel, and have a family. That man didn’t just take her life; he took our souls,” her mother said tearfully during a vigil in her memory.

The case is still in court. Victor Cardona was charged with

Aggravated femicide , a crime that in Colombia can carry a sentence of up to 50 years in prison. Society now demands not only justice for Angie, but  real measures to protect other women before it’s too late.
