The First American Pope, What You Need to Know About Pope Leo XIV

On May 8, 2025, history was made as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, a significant milestone in the Church’s 2,000-year history.

An American with Global Roots

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost is of French, Italian, and Spanish descent. He holds dual citizenship in the United States and Peru, reflecting his extensive missionary work in South America. Prevost spent decades in Peru, serving as a missionary, bishop, and eventually as the Archbishop of Chiclayo.

His deep connection to Latin America and fluency in multiple languages have made him a bridge between diverse cultures within the Church.

 A Humble Servant and Reformer

Pope Leo XIV is known for his humility and dedication to service. He joined the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1982. His leadership roles have included serving as the Prior General of the Augustinian order and, more recently, as the Prefect of the Dicastery for

Bishops since 2023. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide, a testament to his administrative acumen and commitment to Church governance.

A Papacy of Unity and Inclusion

Pope Leo XIV’s election comes at a time when the Catholic Church faces numerous challenges, including ideological divisions and declining participation in certain regions. His background suggests a papacy focused on unity, pastoral care, and inclusivity.

He has been recognized for implementing reforms that promote greater participation within the Church, such as involving women in advisory roles for bishop appointments.

 Guiding the Church Forward

As the new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue the path of thoughtful reform initiated by his predecessors.

His experience in both North and South America positions him to address the global needs of the Church effectively. With a focus on compassion, humility, and bridging divides, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership aims to guide the Catholic Church through the complexities of the modern world.
