2,000-Year-Old Mask Unearthed in Ancient Mexican Pyramid

A 2000-year-old mask that was discovered at the base of a Pyramid in Mexico has Reddit users all saying the same thing.

The Pyramid of the Sun, in the city of San Juan Teotihuacan, is one of Mexico’s most impressive monuments, which attracts millions of visitors a year.

Archaeologists have estimated the ancient structure – which was the subject of a dig in 2011 – was built around 100 CE.

Earlier this week, a resurfaced image of a green mask found by researchers during the dig was shared on Reddit.

To gain access to the pyramid, researchers from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology relied on a tunnel built by archaeologists in the 1930s.

In addition to the green mask, the team also discovered shards of clay pottery, animal bones and three serpentine human figurines.

Archaeologists believe these were ‘ceremonial offerings’ made by the builders of Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Sun before construction began around 50 A.D.

The dig also uncovered the skull of a feline, the skull of a canine, and the skull of an eagle covered with volcanic rock.

The serpentine stone mask was so delicately carved and detailed that archaeologists believe it may have been a portrait.

However, many Reddit users said the first thing that jumped to mind when they saw the image was a comedy film from the 1990s.

Referencing the main character’s distinctive way of speaking, one person wrote: ‘Sssssmokin’!’

Another joked: ‘Sssssomebody stop me!’

‘Urgh,’ a third said. ‘Does this mean we get another Jim Carrey movie?’

Meanwhile, a fourth gave away the joke and wrote: ‘Opened comments to find something about The Mask movie. Was not disappointed.’

The Mask – which was released in 1994 – starred Jim Carrey as an otherwise ordinary bank clerk who turned into a superhero when he donned a luminous green face covering.

The film, which also starred Cameron Diaz, reportedly grossed over $350m at the box office and won the 1995 MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Comedic performance.

Located in the ancient Mesoamerican city of Teotihuacan it is the world’s third largest pyramid and the biggest building in the complex located at the center of the ancient city.

At its peak, Teotihuacan was a bustling city populated by 200,000 people.

However despite their impressive population stats, relatively little is known about them today.

The Pyramid of the Sun is one of the largest structures of its type in the Western Hemisphere.
